all around the table...

One gift we were looking forward to purchasing with money we generously received at our wedding, was a dining table. Not just any dining table, but one with a sense of uniqueness that we could put the Kuipers' stamp on.

When I think about all the memories created around my dining table as a child, I wanted to have a piece that would allow Brett and I to create those same memories with our family someday. So commences the search for the perfect dining table and chairs. This also raised the question of how many chairs are we going to need...ahem...how many kids are we having? That conversation will have to be another post. We settled that 6 chairs should be sufficient at this time.

We scoured antique shops and flea markets that we frequent, but everything was either too expensive, already refinished, not enough chairs, or no chairs at all. The right table was not jumping out at us; please junk fairy...bring me something good! Not that we didn't have something to eat on, but the two person bistro table currently rocking the center of the dining room was likely too small to fit 6 large 'bros' around it for fun and games.

This is my favorite part of antiquing and junk hunting - you never know when you are going to make the right find! One day on my way home from work, I stopped at one of my favorite shops, Not So Shabby. {They have also added a vintage clothing boutique now!} After being distracted by hats and shoes of old, I rounded a corner and stopped in my tracks as the perfect mid-century claw-foot table beamed with lights coming as if from heaven. Almost thinking it was too good to be true, I proceeded cautiously.

Was this in good condition? Seemingly solid. Nothing that I couldn't tighten up.

Could I paint it or use as it? The scuffed surface and motifs begged to be chalk painted. Follow - up, would Brett let me paint it...

How many chairs...one, two, three - 6! And there was even what I call the papa bear chair. Increase Brett's manliness score with a papa bear chair - check.

Okay junk fairy, please don't break my heart. How much is this masterpiece? $175?! That was less than the $300 budget Brett and I planned. Now, what else can I scoop up with the remaining $125...stop, get back on track, Dar.

Brett and I made plans to go back and see it Saturday, where he was delighted with the price and the condition. He exclaimed that for $175 I could do whatever I wanted to it...don't tempt me glitter, stick to just paint and re-upholstery.

My excitement could hardly be contained to get this project loaded in the truck. Much to my dismay, the truck decided to die when we pulled in the parking spot. So instead of tossing the table in the back, we were saying prayers to make it to AutoZone. The table would be picked up another day; it's almost what I imagine dropping your kindergartner off to the first day of school would be like...okay, maybe not.

Once we got it home, it filled the dining space quite nicely. Not too big, not too small, just right. Now to find the perfect fabric for the seat and the right color {it will not be the first sample color - American Paint Company's Liberty}! Any suggestions? I have a tester chair going in a shade called Paris Grey by Annie Sloan that I like as well...

Have you ever had car trouble put a damper on a junk hunt? How about not being able to fit something in your car on an occasion? With my bug I once had to get creative enough to fit a queen mattress in it...share some love below!
