this old couch...

Brett and I love junk.

Everything old has a story; we could spend hours {and we have} picking through antique and second hand stores. We have had many a trips derailed by garage sale signs promising the best of someone's junk. One Sunday, on our drive to the beach we drove past an old neighborhood in Holland where we had luck buying a large painting turned chalk board for the wedding.

There she was, like a beacon of light on a rough sea. In all her velvety moss-green glory, this couch was the pinnacle of this yard sale.

All it took was for me to impulsively point and shout, look at that couch! Brett careened the truck and made a beeline for the yard sale. Man, I am one lucky woman to have a man after my own heart...even if it is after a giant moss-green couch.

As we pulled up, the Victorian engraved detail on the wood spoke to my design heart, and plans for restoring this couch were rolling in my mind. Check out the handiwork below; how could you not? {Disregard moving boxes in the background.}

The seller wanted $125, but there were broken springs, and it needed to be reupholstered since the velvet was starting to decay and rub off. We both fell in couch love, especially when Brett sat on it and tried to convince me to as well. My lesson had been learned, you sit - you buy. I knew as soon as I curled up on those over stuffed springy cushions it would be as good as in the back of the truck.

Never wanting to pay full price for anything, I did not want us to seem desperate and Brett told the seller we had to think about it first. We walked to the truck and discussed where to put it, how we would plan to refurbish it, and if it was worth the work. Since the house was already a mess from the move anyway, we decided one large moss-green velvet couch would be the perfect touch to the living room scene.

We went to the bank to withdraw $100 cash to use as negotiating power. Thinking about it, $100 for a couch wasn't a bad price...especially one with as much character and 'flair' as this one. This was our opportunity to have a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture - SOLD! The seller was willing to come down $25, since $100 was all I had and she really didn't want to move it back inside now that it was the end of her yard sale.

Green-mossy {the name I have chosen for her} went in the back of the truck, and we resumed back to our day at the beach. The number of looks we garnered driving around for an afternoon with that thing in the truck bed were priceless. Even Brett's sister deemed it an ugly sight; what she didn't see was the design board coming together in my mind. This settee and chair inspiration from Joss & Main had me at hello.

look at the white washed woodwork and neutral coverings...

I can't wait to turn Green-mossy into something awesome...first let me watch some YouTube spring re-upholstery videos...

Stay tuned for progress photos and the finished product!
