what's cooking :: blue apron review

Grocery shopping is the worst! Brett and I  cringe at the thought of heading to the store on a relaxing or busy weekend. The last place I desire to be after a long day of nose to the grindstone is at the store.  Every time I grab a cart, I hope my experience is a tiny bit more amazing than the last. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results?  If only I had a magic grocery fairy that would do my grocery shopping for me...

My wildest dreams have come true! After reading one of my favorite blogs (The Freckled Fox), I found BlueApron.com was the answer to my grocery fairy wishes. Not only would they provide your groceries at your doorstep each week, they also put together meals with recipes that will satisfy a diverse palate. Since The Freckled Fox was offering a promotion, it was a great opportunity to give it a try.

After my first week of smashingly successful recipes, I have opted in thrice more. Each week, deliveries arrive on Thursday via UPS in a refrigerated box. Our plan includes 3 meals for 2 people (6 meals total). Recipes often have more than enough for 2 people, so I am often set for the week with new meals on 3 nights and leftovers in between for dinners and lunch.

Given that you might not like the recipes coming your way, you can select your menu from 6 options. So far, they have not let me down in the tastiness department. Blue Apron has great step-by-step instructions that have turned me from a novice in the kitchen to somewhat mediocre at preparing gourmet style dishes. It has caused me to be daring while trying new combinations and ingredients I had before never heard of.

Sauteing fennel? Pistachio crusted catfish? Yes, consider me the new chef en résidence at La Cuisine Kuipers. Ok, that might be going a step too far, but that is what is going on in my imagination while I mince the fresh cilantro...

Perhaps you need to escape your recipe rut, or take a week off from the rat race at Meijer, whatever your reason hop on over and give Blue Apron a try! Thank you magical grocery fairy!

Here are some photographs of our favorite dishes from our first week...
